The Complex Woman

“Landscapes” is the central theme for my latest series of work. When I first stepped off the plane from London, almost 40 years ago, my very first impression of New Zealand was the colour and the light - in the UK my work was mostly black and white. Here, I was inspired to explore the vast range of colours in our Northland landscape. If you are a Northland resident, you will recognise the familiar … the old wooden church, the vege garden, the dark sea and light sky … and my favourite ‘The Complex Woman’. When viewed as a portrait, you can clearly see a very complex woman but when you view the painting in landscape form, the power of the feminine as ‘mother earth’ is reflected up into the night sky. Lots to think about!
