‘Spring’ October 2024
Waking up the land
A series of paintings inspired, not surprisingly, by the changing season and the difference it makes to our natural environment.
Whilst we all visually appreciate the outcome of this season with its spring flowers, crisp green foliage and an abundance of colour, this series of artwork has also sought to capture the magic and power of Spring.
It recognises the underlying message behind the season, the unstoppable power to create, to lift our spirits, encourage us to move, and contemplate new beginnings … it is the season of ‘hope’.
I dare any of you to tell me that you feel absolutely nothing, when you observe the gifts of this season. Even the most hardened of souls, will soften with baby birds in nests, new born lambs trailing behind their Mums in paddocks of emerald green, spring bulbs bursting with colour and perfume and fruit trees draped in blossom.
These feelingss are not insignificant - the benefits of spending time in green and blue (water) spaces on our physical and mental wellbeing, are backed up by scientific study. Research is now confirming what farmers and philogophers have known for centuries … you feel better when you are out in nature. Your physical activity usually increases, your mental wellbeing is on par with the benefits observed with cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT), you feel calmer and your immune system is strengthened.
It is thought that when we are removed from the natural world and lose our connection with the rhythms, seasons, and cycles of nature, we are more likely to experience stress, insomnia and what some philosophers have referred to as “fracturing of the soul”, meaning we lose our way.
