The Sky, the Sea, the Land

Many years ago, as a teacher, I spent some time on a marae and exploring the Far North. The places and the feelings have stayed with me, quietly in the background. Thirty years later, I find myself selecting the Maori Channel on TV more often than others. It seems to have more relevance for me than the western culture of programs like ‘Married at First Sight”.

Living on a lifestyle block just out of town, spending time in the gardens observing the birdlife and the changing seasons, I feel my connection with the natural environment deepening and, like anyone who develops an interest in something, you then start to seek out and gravitate towards others who feel the same way.

This painting is inspired by the Maori culture and its strong, spiritual ties to the sky, the sea, and the land (Rangi, Moana, Whenua). There is a lot to be learned, if we are willing to listen. This work is my interpretation of the spirit of our landscape.
